Nanoindentation or microhardness testing elucidate the mechanical properties of shale and other geological samples. Fast mapping reveals information unattainable from bulk mechanical testing.

Scanning electron microscopy shows microstructure and phase distribution. Elemental analysis with EDS can correlate this to material information.
