Scanning Electron Microscope

The porosity and composition of sedimentary rocks like sandstone and siltstone may be characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as a complementary technique to other established methods for the oil and gas industry.

The Phenom is an accessible desktop SEM designed to combine ease of use with high quality imaging. The Phenom SEM creates the opportunity to bring analysis on site for fast sample turnaround. It also offers the opportunity to perform elemental analysis via energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), allowing for the identification of elements.

The Phenom SEM has an integrated optical navigation system that shows where images can be acquired. Combined with the integrated and standard motorized XY stage, it is possible to easily locate and position a sample anywhere in the viewing area. The system is insensitive to vibrations so additional infrastructure is not required.

Because a backscattered electron detector (BSD) is standard with the Phenom, SEM images inherently display the material contrast of core samples. Images may also be acquired in topographic mode.

An option for the Phenom Pro series SEM is a custom-designed core sample holder. With a diameter up to 1.5 inches, this holder is ideal for core samples like Berea sandstone.
