ParticleX Steel Metal Cleanliness Example Report

Summary:

Sample Information: Mechanically polished rolled steel samples are placed in the metallurgical stage insert for the Phenom XL Desktop SEM and analyzed using the ParticleX Steel solution.

Report includes the following

  • Sample and run information – includes sample details, microscope and analysis parameters
  • Parameters to conduct metal cleanliness evaluation, including:
    • Standard(s) used for analysis
    • Rolling direction – automatically detected; indicates the orientation of the sample relative to the rolling direction of the metal
    • Dimension S – maximum offset distance between nearest neighbor inclusions, along the rolling direction, to be considered a stringerDimension D – maximum separation distance between nearest neighbor inclusions, perpendicular to the rolling direction, to be considered a stringer
    • SEM Field Size – the area of each field of view used by ParticleX to perform analysis
  • EDS classes present – lists the elemental classifications included in each inclusion class per ASTM E2142; inclusion classes are also based on geometric properties per ASTM E45
  • SEM field severity ratings (Method D)– for each inclusion class (Type A,B,C and D), the inclusions are categorized by their thickness and the number of fields per each severity rating is determined. Field severity ratings are based on inclusion density per ASTM E45.
  • Stringers report – geometrical summary statistics of stringers, grouped by inclusion class and thickness
  • Worst field report (Method A) – table listing the field number with the worst severity rating, per inclusion class and thickness  
  • Oversized stringers report – A listing of oversized stringers feature ID’s, measured area, and class
  • Run data statistics – statistical data of the entire inclusion data set
  • Stage map – shows location and size of the 20 largest inclusions
  • Detailed particle data from the 20 largest inclusions
